Golden Temple

Golden TempleGolden Temple: The Holy Place for Sikhs in Punjab

The Golden Temple in Amritsar is also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib. This prominent Sikh Gurdwara is a prime pilgrimage destination in Amritsar. The fourth Sikh Guru Ram Das had built it in 1604. The holy book of Sikhism, called the Adi Granth, was later installed in the Golden Temple by Guru Arjun. Known for embracing people of all religions, castes and creeds, the Golden Temple has four gates, reflecting this ideology. Over the years, this temple has evolved as a symbol of brotherhood, solidarity and equality. The memorial plaques, embellished inside the Gurdwara commemorate the audacious sacrifices of the Sikh leaders against tyranny and injustice.

It is also built at a level lower than the surrounding land; it hopes to teach the important lesson of humility and egalitarianism. This feature is a prominent landmark of Sikh architecture. A large lake, called as Sarovar, consisting of the 'holy nectar' or 'amrit' surrounds the Gurdwara. The marble artwork embellishing the ceiling of the Gurdwara, dates back to the 19th century. Vaisakhi and Guru Nanak Jayanti in Golden Temple are celebrated with great style and fervour. It is definitely a beautiful sight to watch the entire Gurdwara illuminated with lights during the festivities.
