HampiHampi: the Heritage Town of Karnataka

Surreal, majestic and ceremonious! Words fall short to describe the charm of Hampi in Karnataka. It is a heritage town, holding the forlorn ruins of Vijayanagar Empire, one of India's most powerful empires. Even Robert Sewell has described the beauty of Hampi in his book ‘A Forgotten Empire.’ The name ‘Hampi’ is derived from the word 'Pampa' - the old name of River Tungabhadra on whose bank the capital city of Vijayanagar Empire was built. It was a thriving city, till the second half of 16th century, when the Sultan of Bijapur was ransacked. Legend has it that Hampi was so rich that it took several days for its wealth to be plundered away by the invaders.

The two beautiful temples in Hampi are Vitalla Temple and Virupaksha Temple. Hampi Tourist Attractions also include the Hampi Bazaar that was once forgotten, but is now slowly coming back to life. Close to Hampi Bazaar is the Sule Bazaar which could not revive itself from its ravage and offers a peaceful stroll amidst the old and quaint edifices. The Royal center, Anegondi, Hassan and the Archaeological Museum in Hampi are some of the other sightseeing options. The museum exhibits the models of the ground plan of the ancient town and some excavated sculptures. Hampi Festival is held every year in November, making it a great time to explore this town of ruins.
