Sightseeing in Aurangabad

Aurangabad

Aurangabad: The City of Gates

Named after Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, this city in Maharashtra is fondly called as the 'City of Gates.' Earlier summoned as Khadki, this 'Tourism Capital of Maharashtra' has also been a part of the Hyderabad's Nizam state. It is currently known as the Gateway to important historic monuments in India like the Ajanta and Ellora Caves. In addition, the city of Aurangabad tops in the list of developing cities in Asia, thereby reflecting its growth. So, this city is a contrasting mixture of modernity and traditional architecture. Even today, the fabric from Aurangabad like the kimkhwab, himroo and pathani are very popular.

There are several tourist attractions in Aurangabad. The first and most prominent one is definitely the Bibi ka Maqbara. Constructed by the Aurangzeb in the loving memory of his wife, the Bibi Ka Maqbara is also called as the 'Taj of the Deccan.'It has the name of the architect, Ata Ullah, engraved on its entrance. Apart from it, the Buddhist caves dating to 4th -8th century BC are located quite near-by to the mausoleum. These caves hail from the time of the Vakatakas and the Chalukyas. In addition, intrepid travellers can also engage in excursions to Paithan, Daulatabad and Pithalkhora from Aurangabad. Though, mostly, the prime reason for exploring Aurangabad still continues to visit the world renowned Ajanta and Ellora Caves. One can still feel the prominent remnants of the Hyderabadi culture in Aurangabad, even after it integrated with Maharashtra.
