Bihar

BiharBihar: A Tryst of Culture, Valour and Knowledge

Previously called as Vihara, meaning a Buddhist monastery, Bihar tourism endows a land of great minds like Lord Buddha, Lord Mahavira and the brave protagonists like King Ashoka. It has always been an educational centre, right from the times of Magadha Empire when Pataliputra and Nalanda were the main seats of learning. Even the Nalanda University in Bihar, was historically prominent in the international platform from times immemorial. Bihar has seen the rule and succession of several empires starting from the great Mauryan Empire to Guptas, Pallavas and finally the Mughals. The great Kautilya of Mauryan Dynasty was the one to write the famous book on statecraft called the Arthashastra. Bihar had a major role during the Indian freedom struggle and gave birth to some great freedom fighters like Jai Prakash Narayan and Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of independent India.

Bihar surprises its visitors with numerous sightseeing options. Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the place where Lord Buddha attained his enlightenment and formulated his philosophy of life. The blazing white Vishwashanti Stupa in Rajgir is another great place to see in Bihar. Patna Museum, Naulakhkha Temple, Maner, Vaishali, Pawa Puri, Golghar, Patan Devi and Patna Sahib Gurudwara are some of the more attractions of Bihar. Although the state celebrates every festival with zeal and fervour, Rajgir Mahotsav and Sonepur Mela (October-November) are some of the sought after times to explore the surreal beauty of Bihar.
